Ashley’s clay obsession began when she took a campus recreation pottery class as Mount Royal College around 1993/1994. As a biology student, she was looking for a creative, non-science outlet and wheel throwing was something that she had always wanted to try. From the moment she sat at the wheel that first time, she was hooked.
Ashley took a break from clay when she transferred to UNBC in Prince George, B.C., to finish her bachelor’s degree with a major in wildlife biology but returned to clay in 2001 after graduation. She became a student and eventually a teacher of wheel thrown, functional pottery.
Her education in clay has been entirely self directed and is continually ongoing. She has travelled extensively to learn new techniques and to help develop her skills. She has been as far as Ireland to salt fire with Marcus O’Mahoney, and as close to home as Red Deer and Medicine Hat. She has had some amazing teachers along the way.
Having a studio in Calgary has been her dream for well over 20 years, and She hopes to inject her passion for wheel throwing and ceramics into all her future students.

Julie’s first experience with pottery was February 2017, when she took her first wheel-throwing class with her daughter for what she thought would be a two-month run. In the ensuing years, she has developed a deep enjoyment for wheel throwing, and for experimenting with new forms, creative structures, and embellishments, and marvelling at the wonderous fiascos of such ambition.
As an instructor, Julie strives to help students develop core skills and master foundational forms, whilst encouraging students to experiment, take risks, and make marvels out of “failures.”
Julie’s almost nine years at Fairview Studios has been foundational to her love of pottery and ceramics, as are her cherished relationships with the talented and inspiring potters at that studio.
Julie is a professional photographer and exhibiting artist, and social media geek. As of September 2024, she is an MFA Candidate in ceramics with AU Arts. She is excited to bring the results of her studies to Centred Clay Studios and to encourage members to expand the creative and experimental side of their practices.
Now to learn how to juggle all these plates!

Dave Settles - Master Potter, Mentor
Dave got started in ceramics as a path to a degree at Kansas State University. After completing his degree, and following four years in the US navy, Dave ended up in Calgary in the early 1970s. Dave is the original owner of Ceramics Canada, which was, at the time, a Polynesian drink-ware manufacturing facility. Dave shifted his business focus to pottery supply and a recreational pottery class facility.
In the early 1990s Dave opened Fairview Studios, a facility offering pottery classes along with functional utilitarian pottery supply, servicing 16 stores in Western Canada. Dave has made ceramics for dignitaries around the world, and some of his work is in the Glenbow Museum’s permanent collection. “After many years of maintaining a living as a functional potter,” Dave says, “I enjoy passing on anything I learned along the way to new pottery enthusiasts. New students are always bringing forth new ideas in pottery.”
